The song title „Get off of my cloud“ by the Rolling Stones was adopted by Peter Gartmann as the title for this series of images „get off of my cloud – runter von meiner Wolke“.

cloud after cloud – and the invention of the sky

clouds draw you into their metamorphic being – white upwards like fading memory – the mysterious, alien – passing in inexhaustible forms in time – in a world in restless, all over arching sky – flowing in constant flux

clouds – as signs of divine intervention – embody the most extreme form of appearance of the intangible – to admire what one sees in them – for everything wonderful on earth – the piling up of very different clouds – flying into mystical light effects, into freedom – bathing in creation’s marvels – clouds like thoughts passing by

as a little boy i often lay down on my back and looked at the cloudy sky – let clouds become images of light and air – changing clouds – dreaming up images of clouds moved by the breeze. At Expo.02 in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland’s national exhibition, the floating and dreaming of Pipilotti Rist’s walkable cloud touched me very much and made me dream of my childhood and revive it.

one of the main themes of the 80’s and 90’s was for me, in analog photography, to get on the track of the cloudy sky. the pictures shown were taken digitally between 2005 and 2020.

Visions in artificial clouds – walkable cloud by Pipilotti Rist

The landmark of Expo.02, Switzerland’s national exhibition, was Pipilotti Rist’s walkable cloud – a construction about 100 meters long and 20 meters high, which stood on supports in Lake Neuchâtel in Yverdon-les Bains. More than 30,000 nozzles sprayed water droplets that created a floating, light-as-air cloud over the lake that changed depending on the wind.
