‘Orlando: A Biography’ (1928): This book is an experimental novel that tells the story of Orlando, a character who lives for centuries and goes from being a man to a woman in the process. The novel plays with themes of gender and identity and explores how these affect the experience of love and self-perception. Orlando’s transformation allows Woolf to question the differences and expectations around gender roles and explore the ways in which love and self-knowledge are shaped by these roles.
‘A Room of One’s Own’ (1929): In this essay, based on lectures Woolf gave at women’s colleges, she discusses the need for women to have independence and space for themselves in order to be creative. While the text focuses heavily on women’s economic and social independence, there are also deeper implications regarding self-love and self-worth. Woolf argues that in order to love themselves and value their own creative abilities, women need freedom and autonomy.
Through her works and her life, Virginia Woolf created a space for women to find themselves
